Late summer of 1980, same summer as The Empire Strikes Back.

It was basically Roger Corman saying, "Hey, you know how The Magnificent Seven is basically Seven Samurai set in the old West?

WHAT IF WE DID IT IN SPACE?"

They even had Robert Vaughn basically playing the same character in both movies: Lee/Gelt, a fugitive gunman who is looking for asylum, the promise of food and shelter, and an escape from his failing ability.


Plus it had a spaceship with boobs:

I wonder if Peppard talked with Corman, saw the script and proclaimed - I love it when a plan comes together
