Cowboys and Texans only play once every four years in the regular season. Rockets and Mavs have rarely competed at the top of the Western Conference at the same time. Astros-Rangers has had a couple of good finishes in the 11 years they've been in the same division - 2015 and last year. This past MLB season is fresh on everyone’s mind, but it’s the first time both the Rangers and Astros have been contenders in the same season. However, it was a legitimate rivalry even before 2023.

The Spurs are probably a bigger rival to both the Rockets and Mavs.
