How many people were in the 2 rooms?
If 4, then that's $21k each. $210/ per person/ per day.
Sounds like a lot, but way cheaper than a nursing home daily rate.

The story doesn't mention it, but I'm sure not getting a refund is why they are upset. I think I'd be upset too if the room was rented to someone else while I already paid for it. If they couldn't fill the room with other guests, I'd be ok with no refund but since you did put other guests in the room, I'd want my money back.
