Canada and Australia have been doing their best to demonstrate to us that they a re NOT like Americans. Australia confiscated firearms a few years back and most recently went on a rather despotic shutdown over the COVID crap. And Canada has been showing us every day for the past few years that personal liberties mean nothing to them.
Unfortunately, I think a lot of our current citizenry would willingly fall in line with similar government edicts quite readily these days.

My takeaway from Covid is that:
-1/3rd of the nation would participate in removing freedoms from their neighbors with any sort of pretext from the government
-1/3rd would just keep their nose in their phone while it happened
-1/3rd would actively or passively resist
My other takeaway was that big business would cheer the process along as long as it meant stable demand, reduced competition from a truly free market and continued profits.
There is no doubt in my mind they would happily abandon an actual capitalistic economy for one where cartels pick winners and partner with the government to divide markets amongst a preselected group of corporations.
