Stephen King has said that Jack Torrance was based on him - he was drinking too much, it was affecting his marriage, he hurt his son while he was drunk. In the novel, Jack was a decent guy trying to do right but the spirit of the Overlook Hotel steered him the wrong way. In the movie, he's an a-hole who is abusive to his wife and son from the get-go.
