quote:Not at all. One of the core themes was changed. King wrote a book about a peaceful man who is corrupted by evil forces within the hotel. Kubrick's Jack character was always crazy and evil, and the hotel just brought that out once and for all.
Changing King's inevitably bad ending and some other parts is doing it justice though.
It was King's #1 reason he hated the movie. But I do agree with your assessment of King's adaptability.

Most King novels have a solid first act, a dynamite second, and a dismal third.
I remember being engrossed in Under the Dome, but holy crap the ending was an utter waste of time.

Stephen King has said that Jack Torrance was based on him - he was drinking too much, it was affecting his marriage, he hurt his son while he was drunk. In the novel, Jack was a decent guy trying to do right but the spirit of the Overlook Hotel steered him the wrong way. In the movie, he's an a-hole who is abusive to his wife and son from the get-go.
