This is true. People tend to lump the river rats and Yats into coonasses. Definitely different entities

Coonass territory is a very small part of the state. Brackish water areas where people are still involved in commercial fishing. Anything outside of that may be “Cajun,” but it’s not “coonass.”

This. Mostly just that it’s evolved into a recognizable and appreciated culture in many ways. And much more widespread.
