I was once told that Magnolia is a giant shrub.
Letting it grow to the ground, "mounding" hides what is an awful mess behind a thick green wall.
If you don't have the room for that, be prepared for a mix of mess and work, follow very soon thereafter by more mess, in perpetuity.
But they are beautiful. And worth it, in my opinion
