Your hunch is correct. Gas costs don't count towards the Costco 2% cash back.

Blue Cash Preferred, there's an annual fee, but I've always out-rewarded it

No, the blue is 6% cash back on groceries and 3% on fuel but you can’t use it at Walmart or DG. It has to be an actual grocery store
