There’s a lot of classic American excitement in your examples. You can see our optimism in those restaurants.


After WW2 we stopped using beauty as a principle in design, and embraced ugliness. I’m guessing this is connected. Most modern designs are visibly oppressive and appear designed to depress everyone who has the misfortune of being in and around them. These buildings don’t inspire any positive emotions. They put you on edge instead.

McDonald's built a new restaurant in Flowood in early 2000's. Has the real arches in the old style.



and Mayor Mary made Sam's alter its design before she approved the permit.

It's funny that you're mentioning this...

I remember passing through Alec back in the early 80's, headed to Toledo Bend, they still had an old school McDonalds with the golden arches that I was really happy to see. Unfortunately, they tore it down and built an up to date one.

You think the “nice” designs pictured are pre WWII? I would have guessed later.
