Truth. There was a peace faction lobbying for keeping the Emperor and some of their conquered colonies. The US would only accept total surrender. Of course, there were also factions arguing to fight to the very last man, woman, and child.

When you tell a culture that honors dying in combat that you'll only accept their total unconditional surrender, you're saying they must fight to the last child that can hold a gun.

Also, if we weren't out in the Pacific creating our own empire, would we have crossed paths with the Japanese?
