This is the opinion of TD's Lifestyle Correspondent:

Barbour is great if you have short English stubby arms with no ape index to speak of. Tom Beckbe has tall sizes. Some folks enjoy hunting for vintage Barbour and Belstaff jackets and that’s great but they just don’t fit me. Schaefer is the gold standard for western jackets in my opinion. Schaefer does waxed cotton like Barbour as well but it’s cut with western style.

Bought a Barbour a couple of years back and returned it because the shoulder area was lacking and built for a tiny little British man with narrow shoulders, I assume.

Schaefer and Filson fit me well but be advised Filson sizing can be hit or miss. I bought a tin cloth Filson jacket a few weeks back and had to size down to a medium from a large while one of their other jackets would require me sizing up to an XL. Good quality that will last a lifetime.

This is also my answer. Not having midget arms or body, I cannot really wear their clothing.

Besides, while waxed canvas is a good looking and timeless tradition, there are better ways to stay warm and dry with lighter materials.
