I don't disagree, but until Lucky Luciano, the Italian Mafia was a lot like the Dixie Mafia. Just a bunch of hustlers, criminals and outcasts trying to make a buck. He "corporatized" them.

True, and its not like the Dixie guys weren't just as ruthless. The Italians had two huge advantages though. They were all of the same race/lineage/religion and more importantly, they were in a densely populated area.
