Don't know anything about the Dixie Mafia, but Galveston TX had the Maceo family mob'd up (and some of their descendants, the Fertitas)

This is fact. I will say though, the terms mob and mafia are thrown around a lot. Neither the Galveston or Dixie group were anything approaching what we think of as The Mafia.

The Galveston "mob" was more of a well run family criminal enterprise that likely had an understanding with more highly organized organization(s). The Dixie Mafia was/is much more similar to a collection of unorganized criminals who happened to cross paths frequently and occasionally worked together to do criminal shite.

I don't disagree, but until Lucky Luciano, the Italian Mafia was a lot like the Dixie Mafia. Just a bunch of hustlers, criminals and outcasts trying to make a buck. He "corporatized" them.
