Boat Trailer Title

So just bought a boat trailer for a friend of mine's son. I have a notarized bill of sale from the seller for it but no title. I am completely clueless when it comes to this but how do I get a title and plate for this thing?
I went to the DMV and they told me even with the bill of sale it was not enough. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Loss title affidavit. Go to a title place like clearview title and they’ll tell you what you need

The seller should also have the title.

Hopefully seller actually owned it. Ive went to buy several cars, campers etc to meet the “owner” only to find out the title is in some other relatives name smh

Good luck. If the title can't be tracked down from owner to owner, Will end up needing to visit the state police.

That’s what I was expecting sadly….basically the SP need to verify it’s road worthy?

No, verify it's not stolen, financed, and how much back taxes and/or license fees are owed.

well, with no title, it is almost useless, and never worth the effort you go through to get a title, just to have 50/50 chance the SP take it from you any way.
the absolute cheapest way to get a title is, assuming the original owner listed on the title is willing to spend his time doing it, he must go to the DMV with proper proof of ID to request a duplicate title sent to him at the cost of $80
then in a couple weeks, he will get the title in the mail and then he can sign it over to you in the presence of a notary $ and then you go back to DMV to get the title transferred to him and pay the title cost of $80
so notary fees and $180 for processing the 2 titles plus what you paid for the trailer is a PITA
what i would do if you cant get a title is to throw lumber on it, and make it into a lawnmower/utility trailer.
or another interesting fact is, it is impossible to tell if a trailer title matches the trailer it is really for. a guy could buy a rusty, rotted out trailer, for $50 just to scrap it, and use that title, on a different trailer, by just adding a serial number plate with the numbers on it. just sayin
