I said something similar when I first started it. The first few episodes kind of drag and I was underwhelmed considering I had heard nothing but good things about it. They weren’t bad really, just was expecting more I guess. But it picks up and by the time you’re finished with the series it’ll most likely be ranked as one of your favorites. That’s how it was for me at least.

It’s that good.

ETA: as for the gay stuff, it’s not overwhelming and isn’t a main focus of the show. Just one of the characters happens to be gay. It wasn’t really a big deal from what I remember.

Never thought it was cheesy or shoe horned in. It was the motivation of why this man does the things he does. You already knew he had blind rage and unwavering determination to his goal, this just told more of why instead of being the characters only trait.

There's absolutely zero political agenda attached to Flint being gay.

And even though his love for Thomas is crucially important to the story, it's barely even mentioned throughout the series. No gratuitous gay love scenes or anything of that nature.
