OK. Under the new proposed legislation (which is not part of current law), if 5,000 in a single day appear at border crossings or in encounters at locations other than border crossings, that triggers a complete shutdown of the border. Such a shut down trigger does not currently exist in US law. Most days we see significantly more than 5,000 people. In the bipartisan legislation, they considered a 5,000 trigger to be necessary to signal a crisis that would justify the complete shutdown of the US border. But now republicans don't want any shutdown. There is no shutdown trigger in US law now.
The problem with setting the number at 5,000 is the cartel coyotes will bring them to the border at a number just under the threshold.
5,000 “closes the border”.
4,999 doesn’t.
The number doesn’t need to be 5,000, 10,000, or 250.
It needs to be zero
