Les didn’t know what a true LT was. He just thought any big guard could fill that position.
In his defense, he did come from the “3 yards and a cloud of dust” style football and that was ALL he was going to run. In that case, having big unglies was necessary to open gaps for running backs. That’s a fine way to play football if you can out physical your opponents. The issue came when Saban came in and had just as dominatingly big defensive lines and you ended up with games like the 2011/12 season where field goals determined the outcome. The difference though is Saban adapted once he figured out he couldn’t out muscle Les on a consistent basis.
