I feel like most folks overestimate the amount of talent available in the portal.

Dalton Knecht came from the portal..:

Wright, Baker, and Cook were solid portal additions. The problem is that he fricked himself so bad with trying to bring half his team over from Murray St is that he really didn’t have a base squad to add them to.

He needs 4 freshman like a Mike Williams or a Brandon Murray that can play and contribute as Freshman but aren’t one and dones to build a base around. Then add 2-3 portal pieces around it. Right now he has 2 solid pieces signed. He needs 2 more imo

He had to bring the Murray kids because the LSU kids at the time rightfully portaled after Wade was fired. KJ was all-SEC, Trae has been solid, Hill was just a disaster though I’ll give you that. His game did not translate.

He’s starting to stack this, Ward and Reed were the first two. They’ve gotten a bit better still room left to grow in their game. Added Mike Williams to that this year, Chest is hopefully working in the background to contribute next year, and now the two top 75 guys next year. On paper that’s a solid enough foundation of program guys that, to your point, you can supplement with a high level impact transfer and some role guys. Now he just has to do that and win. Hopefully he can but if not it’s time to move on.
