A lot of my friends from Houston are moving away from woodlands because there are specific type of very academic people who are crowding the schools making it harder for their kids to get top10%. Makes me think is it acceptable to run away from strong competition?

For the non Texans, top 10% gets you into all state schools (I think UT is 8%)

I don't know. Texas has an agreement with New Mexico that New Mexico Residents can pay Texas in state tuition in a program that does not have a specific degree program. They also apply the 10% rule to those kids...its not many but vet school is a big one. I think I would study long and hard about moving from New Mexico to a highly competitive school system if my kid was one of those.

By the way the Texas model is VERY admirable. It is my understanding that most of those kids who would not make the cut otherwise do pretty well in Texas universities. That may just be wishful thinking but Texas should be admired for ensuring their kids have a spot if they do the right thing. It may be Lubbock or San Angelo but they have a spot.
