OP do not do this That is so lame.
What? If you do this tactfully, why not? Yeah, don’t go bother the sheetrock guy when he’s on stilts but if he’s down you can ask him for a card. Those guys are begging for people to hire them. Why would they not want an engaged owner/contractor to come to them?
And if they get pissy, you dodged a bullet.

Would you walk in an office setting and get the info of a secretary because you're looking for a secretary at your job?
I'm not saying the subs wouldn't be interested, but you're openly trying to take away subs from a contractor on said contractors job. And if you wanted to be technical, you technically wouldn't be authorized to be on the job site.
This is coming from a GC. I'm not even in this thread telling the homeowner not do contract his home out himself, but just coming from a contractors perspective, this would make me mad. If a homeowner came up to me on a job I would 100% be cool talking with them and even give them the names of numerous subs that I have available that I'm not currently using on jobs. But if I or one of my project managers came up to a random homeowner on my job trying to poach workers, then yea, I would kindly ask them to leave.
