this could be an olive branch out to Sony to perhaps make them consider putting Game Pass on PlayStation if they're truly trying to get out of the console market.
This is actually a good example of why these rumors don't make sense. An announcement like this would have taken the FTC's arguments against the ABK purchase completely away from them. Why spend all that money fighting the FTC if they were just going to turn around and make an announcement like this now? That deal could have closed in 2022, without the major court battles and without the CEO and multiple executives publicly testifying under oath about internal business practices, if they had simply made a move like this. The timing of this would be quite odd.
If these rumors are true, the most likely reason is Microsoft is going to buy another large publisher and they want to remove the FTC's primary argument from them.

ol' phil must be a master salesman to the MS higher-ups if they make another purchase like the ABK purchase.
i highly doubt that's the case. i bet they're pivoting. they're going in on GamePass and leaving the hardware aspect behind them. you'll be streaming games Apple TV, Rokus, Smart TVs, PSs, Nintendos, phones, tablets, etc.
they'll probably pay "rent" on those devices, but that's got to be cheaper than manufacturing consoles.
