They are more like elite fighter pilots.
Once upon a time these guys experienced 5 and 6 Gs during high speed corners and braking.
And they do that for 50-70 laps, sometimes in extreme heat.
Are elite fighter pilots athletes?
I'm not sure I care about the distinction. But it takes very special people to compete at this level.

This a damn good analogy. I would take it a step farther and say they are most like Blue Angel pilots. Of course, the main difference being F1 guys are actually competing AGAINST each other and not performing with each other.
