Check the trans filter,fluid and pump. Reverse typically has higher line pressure than forward. Engine may be getting choked out due to torque converter not getting enough pressure and essentially killing the engine.

Was checking some Ford forums and saw this suggested too.
Saw some mentions of getting the wrong filter installed during a service too. The replacement doesn't fit correctly and falls down too low in the pan.
Will definitely check all.
