They got conquered and then spent the majority of the past 2300 years being ruled by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arab Islamic Empire, the Islamic Caliphate, the Ottomans, and the British.



That is what happens when most of the population has to live on small percentage of land along a river because the rest of the country in an uninhabitable desert.
