Living in the NYC area, the school kids learn English pretty quickly in part because of the schools having a lot of experience at English as a second language, but mostly because kids of many languages only have one way to talk to other kids. Peer pressure is a powerful force.
It funny to see a little kid 6 years old, translating for their grand parents in a grocery store.
