As a new hunter (45 yrs old) that just killed my first deer ever right after Christmas, get something in the $500 range. Get a nice scope for it which will make all the difference. I bought a Ruger American in 6.5 Creedmoor, but there are other great rounds. This one seemed like a good all around one. Make sure you sight it and go back to shoot it a week or two before you actually go hunting.

If I could push an easy button for whitetails at this moment it would be:
Stainless tikka .308 - 799.99 plus the $75 rebate
Edit, gunzonedeals has the t3x for 722.99 if you email for quote
Sportsmatch to48 rings - $56
Trijicon Huron 3-9x40 -$300
Then go anywhere that sells ammo and get the deadliest mushroom in the woods, the Remington Core Lokt.
