It's been going on since at least 1986. Charlie Graddick encouraged Alabama Republican voters to cross over and vote for him for Governor in the Democratic Primary. This was against Democratic Party rules, however it had never been enforced. Graddick won the Primary, but was disqualified by the Democratic Party.
