Rog is angry because he is far behind his peers at this stage in his life. I know people like him who reach their 50s and 60s and this realization sets in. It also sets in they will never get to retire.
He copes by justifying it however he can. One of those copes is they are only ahead of him because they took advantage of "free" stuff. WTF that even means?
