No; wanting to avoid certain cities is the intelligent thing to do.

Nah, it's being a pussy to avoid entire cities.
1. Every major city has areas you avoid. You will know, without a doubt, when you're in one of those areas. Homeless will be everywhere, shady motherfrickers just standing around for no reason, shitty businesses on the streets with bars or pull-down doors for security at night. You see that, head back in the direction you came from.
2. Every major city has amazing areas with amazing things to do, food to eat, things to see and experience. Any man who would refuse to take his family to check out Chicago, for example, due to the unfounded thought that the entire city is a dangerous shithole, is not only a pussy, but also a fricking ignoramus.
3. Gangbangers don't want to murder tourists. Dead tourists bring on a lot of heat from the law and the press.
I think OP's point was to not pussy out on seeing the world because of unrealistic fears. The fear porn you see on TV or read in the news does not define every city block.
