I am agnostic on Raymond as an on-field coach, because I know I don't have nearly enough information to have an intelligent take. Like I'm sure 99.99% of people on here--despite this thread being 6 pages worth of opinions--who haven't seen him work day-to-day and, even if we did, would have no real baseline or reference to compare him to.

That said, I've got Cowherd on in the background, and in his hot-taking on Harbaugh at Michigan, actually said something that stood out to me. (Paraphrasing) "Michigan used the same strategy last night/this year that Georiga used, and LSU, and Bama, and USC before them. They had the best players." And we simply have not had the best players on defense the last several years, specifically at DB and DL. If there was a consensus "best" technical DB coach in the country and we had him on staff the past 2 years, given the same players, I don't know if he makes a significant difference, if any at all.

We've got to have better players on defense to compete. If Raymond is the hire, it's likely MUCH more to do with BK and Frank's vision and plan to recruit and land better players than his on-field coaching abilities (assuming he's at least competent, which I think he's proven). I think whoever winds up getting the DL coaching job will also be a part of that vision/plan. And it's going to be a lot easier to recruit guys to play in Baker's system in Kelly's program than it was to recruit to Bo Pelini's/Daronte Jones' and Ed Orgeron's.
