A lot of people back then came from rural areas on in the city where they had to hustle or work for money to pay for basics such as food. They also lived during the Great Depression which made a lot of them thick skinned, and they had grit. My grandfather was in WWI and worked in shipyards during WWII. When you are poor and do not know where the next meal comes from to feed your family, you are willing to work hard for less.

Today the kids have everything handed to them and are soft.
