i would submit that spacing them in conjunction with openings or other structural items is more important. ie if you have 3 equally spaced windows on a wall, place a light between each and one on the outside of the ends. you want symmetry and balance.

in that pic i would not have gone with the lights in the gables, i don't like how that looks...

Agreed. There needs to be a lot of symmetry when using soffit lights. The mix-matched gables look terrible with the lighting. This would've been better off to have wired in-ground spotlighting.
