We often hear that slavery was America's original sin.

I humbly believe that the Civil War was America's penance.

The country as a whole suffered over one million casualties in the war, a penance paid in the blood, death, and suffering of the American people. I don't know if monetary reparations would ever come close to the cost our nation paid in blood.
