Is throwing a rod not covered by insurance?

No insurance covers a blown engine. It’s a maintenance issue and it’s a specific exclusion in every policy.

However, there is a caveat. If your blown engine is destroyed due to a covered loss (like flood water in the engine) then the insurance will pay for it.

Geico has an option to cover certain mechanical issues. Dad's Tahoe got a new transmission paid by insurance. Didn't think stuff like that existed but it does. Can't say an engine would be covered if they can prove the owner wasn't giving proper maintenance. Transmission and car were fairly young so it didn't make sense for it to go out as early as it did.
