I’m an older worker. I’m in my 50s and have been with the same company over 30 years. I get 6 weeks vacation and can carry over one week. So in a given year I can have as much as 7 weeks vacation. But my wife only gets 2 weeks vacation. So, there’s no point for me to carry over any time from one year to the next. So what I’ll do is take random Friday’s off through the year, usually to spend the day working on whatever model is on my desk at that time. Right now I’m taking the week between Christmas and New Year to use up the last of this year’s days.

But frick a bunch of not using my days off. I’ve worked to hard for too long not to take advantage of what I’ve earned.

After I built up my PTO I made it a personal goal to take off 2 consecutive weeks per year. That would give me a few days to decompress and then enjoy the remainder without even thinking of work. Would take the remainder throughout the year when I wanted.

I was at 5 weeks of vacation plus 7 personal days (no clue why they separated the two) and then our company went to "Unlimited PTO". There are two reasons I can see them doing that.

1) People will feel more guilty for using it
OR
2) They don't have to pay it out if you quit or get fired/laid off.

So with that in mind, I made sure to take more than what I would have if we were on the earned vacation schedule. I also take long weekends most of the year. I also take a week in late November/early December every year for hunting.

Damn I need to come work for the same dealer you do. 30.5 years, and only get 4 weeks.
