I heard this last night on the selection show on ESPN regarding LSU's 08 season being the worst for a defending National Champion since 1943. Now true, I have been on the rant every day, but is this true, and if so then what are they using as critiria for such a statement? Is it strictly W/L?

This was posted last week. Yes, I think they are going by the record to make that determination. However, if other criteria, such as subjective analysis of how good they really are regardless of record, were used, we'd still be the worst.

Since they made a big deal about "first 2 loss NC team since _____", it kinda figures.

Maybe. BAMA's official record for 1993 (they were NC in 92) is 1-12 (had to forfeit all regular season games they won that year).

I believe they said we were the first defending champ in that many years to have a losing record in conference the next year. At least that's what I heard.

If so, it is not much better than us.

After Bobby Ross led us to a national title in 1990, we went 8-5 the following season in his last year before departing for the San Diego Chargers.

So...I guess if you beat us you would tie GT for the worst record following a national championship...or so that I can find. If LSU loses...well...you know.

What I am sure of...is our subsequent head coach, Bill Lewis, made history by allowing us to compile the worst four year record following a national title in college football history.

1990: 11-0-1
1991: 8-5
1992: 5-6
1993: 5-6
1994: 1-10

George O'Leary then came in and fixed us again, got us to a bowl game in 1997...and now we have been to bowl games in 12 straight seasons.

Seems to me I heard something like that too, W/L in conference play.

Who really cares?

7-5 stinks and should have been 9-3 (Bammer, Arky). But it could have been much worse (Aub, Troy).

Let's move on.

Just heard it last night, found it shocking, and wanted confirmation, that's all.

Not true. Not even true in the last decade. LSUs season is well within historic boundaries. Since the inception of the BCS, half the time a team has experienced a 20% or more decline from their NC year.

Tenn (13-0) to (9-4)-- 31% decline
Fla St (12-0) to (11-2) -- 16% decline
Okla (12-0) to (11-2) -- 16% decline
Miami (12-0) to (12-1) -- 9% decline
Oh St (14-0) to (11-2) -- 16% decline
LSU (13-1) to (9-4) -- 23% decline
USC (13-0) to (12-1) -- 9% decline
Texas (13-0) to 10-3) -- 24% decline
Florida (13-1) to (9-4) -- 23% decline
LSU (12-2) to (7-5) -- 27% decline

And #40 in the BCS. Shameful. A disgrace to LSU and the football program.

I'd still prefer to be a "worst defending NC" to a "best team not to win a NC"

Penn State went 8-4 and ultimately unranked after winning the NC in '87. Of course they were independent at the time so conference record does not exist.

I'll take "worst defending champion" over "best defending runner up"
