I agree that these movies are absolutely in the conversation for best trilogy of all time. The only other contenders that come to mind is the Godfather and BTF.
LOTR trilogy was awesome. My only gripe is that there was no Tom Bombadill (SP?) and I think the ending should have stayed closer to the book...where Saruman attacks the Shire.
Also didn't care for that gheyass reunion series when Frodo wakes up after being rescued from the Mt. Doom by the Eagles.

Better than both, if you are talking trilogies you have to have 3 great movies. There is no movie in LOTR that dips to Godfather 3 or BTTF 2 levels.
BTTF is closer than Godfather though.
