Yeah, there were only four BCS bowl games so it used to be very difficult just to play in one. You either had to be a conference champion from one of the six power conferences or get one of the two at-large berths so there were great teams like 1998 Kansas State and 2001 Tennessee who couldn't even make it to one. So if you were fortunate enough to play in a BCS bowl, it was a huge deal.
Plus every game was aired on ABC. People keep saying there's little difference between games shown on ABC compared to ESPN because everybody has cable nowadays but that's definitely not the case. The vibes are completely off compared to the days when all the big postseason games were on OTA television. You could just sit down and watch all of the big bowl games on New Year's Day and not even have to change the channel. It's just different today and not in a good way.
