No they wouldn't have been. At best they could have gotten a split as the Orange Bowl that season was #1 Florida State vs. #2 Nebraska. West Virginia was #3. Why would the polls DROP Florida State from #1 after beating #2 in the bowl game?
Also...that completely ignores 11-1 Notre Dame finishing #2 behind Florida State despite beating them straight up in South Bend that November.

There's no guarantee that WVU would've even gotten a share. We saw that the very next year when undefeated Penn St DID win their bowl game.

Same reason the committee dropped an undefeated team after a ranked win.
