I’m kind of a minimum .300 win mag for elk. Yes there are a lot of calibers that will kill one, but I want to be sure that if I make a good shot it’s going down.
Yea, if I’m spending significant time and money on an elk hunt, I want to bring a gun that’s going to give me the best opportunity to take an ethical shot.
Many elk have been taken with a .243, but there are much better tools out there.
If you want one gun to cover both deer and elk, I would go on the heavier side. 7mag, .300 mag, 30-06, .308 at the lightest.
