Most reviews/opinions I've read think 3's villain is the best in the series. I am surprised this was your opinion.
I've only played primal and 3, so I personally don't have an opinion on it.
I'm trying not to heavy spoiler it, but I said the first vs the main villain.
I assume Vaas is who you're talking about.
SPOILER WARNING
Why I say what I do is you kill him halfway in. Then you get to Hoyt, the actual villain and he's really underwhelming in comparison to Vaas.
I like Joseph from 5 as a villain, but Vaas is great. My issue with 3 in general is Vaas is only there for half the story and when he's gone, the game is worse for it.
It's why I haven't finished. One you get beyond Vaas's storyline, it's just not nearly as compelling.

I played the "remaster" of 3 on the PS4, and it had some massive input lag. Felt like I was playing on PSNow or something.
Really negatively impacted my experience. That said, objectively 4 is probably better than 3. 4 is basically a palette swap of 3 with better visuals.
I really loved 5 though. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed the game given its setting. I honestly found 6 to basically be Far Cry 5 with a more traditional campaign bolted into it, so I'm not sure where the hate comes from outside of keeping some of the RPG mechanics from New Dawn (ie can't loot enemy guns).
