For all the excuses made about Notre Dame recruiting limitations they've continually ranked ahead of Michigan in talent composite

How’s that worked out for them?

They are currently tied with Michigan in playoff appearances soon to fall 1 behind unless we see the biggest upset in conference championship history.

The both have 0 playoff wins.

Notre Dame has 1 losing season.
Michigan has 2 (B1G Covid season was weird)

Notre Dame has 4 total NY6 appearances.
Michigan will have their 5th this year.

Notre Dame has 6 10 win seasons.
Michigan has 6 10 win seasons.

Head to head is 1-1

Both teams have finished in the top 10 3 times. Michigan should go up 4-3.

Seems like they've been pretty even with a slight edge to Michigan.

Harbaugh is a marginally better coach than Kelly (I'd probably take both over anyone active not named Nick Saban or Kirby Smart) and is significantly better than Freeman. That's the difference.
