I think originally they found a niche for middle class travel - people who couldn't afford a nice hotel and didn't want to stay in a rundown filthy Super 8 with drug dealers and hookers fighting in the hallway. So they dressed up a 3rd option and tried to make it hip.

But now the cost is the same as chain hotels with more hassle, fewer amenities, etc. It's not worth it. But there are exceptions like when you want an extended group under one roof, or you're in a pinch, or you are visiting a place off the beaten path.
