I have a bunch in my yard. They're pretty cool when they run around. Apparently they destroy inground hornet nests.
I've never tried to handle them but they're supposed to be very docile.
Did you accidentally smush it or something?

Was playing baseball with my son and he tossed the bat, went to pick it up and also picked up the red velvet ant.
Forgot how hard they were to kill.
