Has nothing to do with strength of character, anyone who has been in one who says they were not uncomfortable is either lying or a rare individual. I have had several and none have been pleasant but I managed to get through them basically by meditating. Given the precautions they provide before hand I would posit that your reaction is not at all unusual. Don't beat yourself up, its a common reaction.
