I hope not. Give the G5 a chance to send their top ranked champ. Its not fair to put in 9-3 teams that were the 3rd or 4th best team in their own conference and leave out a 12-1 G5 champ.

You have the “they should’ve scheduled tougher teams OoC” argument, but those tougher opponents rarely would agree to a home-and-home with a G5 school, so they’re always at a disadvantage if they try to schedule high profile games OoC since it’ll almost always be road games with no return game

They are more than welcome if they are ranked in the top 12. I see no reason to force them into a position, but I am okay with sending them if they are really worthy of a top 12 position. Which means, essentially, if they are undefeated they can be in. If they lose a game, they are out. I think that's pretty fair for the level of competition that most of them play against.

What if they run the table in conference and their only loss is a close game against a top 10-15 P5 school on the road? You’d be penalizing a G5 school for trying to schedule quality OoC opponents when its one-sided on what school gets to host. Very few P5’s (outside of the conference bottom feeders) are going to agree to home-and-home series vs a G5 team.

With a 12 team field, there needs to be at least 6 spots guaranteed for conference champs. Its dumb to have so many at-large spots that the 3rd and 4th best teams from thr B1G and SEC get in almost every year. Cheapens the regular season if you can lose 3 games and still be practically guaranteed a playoff spot.
