Im not sure we can give the British Empire the credit for developing American society.
Ive long thought the vastness of the land itself, along with the rebel nature of a lot of the early settlers in the wilderness created the American spirit.
Plus you add the influence of french and spanish settlers. The French in particular hated everything about the Brits at the time.
