Any empire is only as good as what you can hold on to.
They bit off more than they could chew too fast. Granted two world wars didn't help.
A fascinating alternate history of the world would be if the US had lost the war of independence. Would we be better or worse off? Also, would this have turned into a Portugal/Brazil scenario where the formal seat of English power eventually comes across the ocean to North America?
