Yes. AI is just the new buzzword for simple algorithms. It makes news and people click on links with it in the title. (like we all just did)

This is not a simple problem at all. The article didn't say it was a simple rules-based system, it said that the algorithms take that data into account to make decisions.
Algorithms to detect fraud aren't simply "if purchase_amount > 1000 and country equals Russia, then fraud". There are countless patterns of data that the algorithms are trained on.
